Trig-Star

Trig*Star is an annual competition that recognizes the best student of trigonometry from school districts across Alabama. The goals of Trig*Star are:

  • promote excellence in the mastery of trigonometry in high school
  • honor high school students who have demonstrated their superior skill among classmates at the local and statewide level
  • acquaint high school students with the use and practical applications of trigonometry in the surveying profession
  • build an awareness of surveying as a profession among mathematically skilled high school students, career guidance counselors, and high school math teachers

Trig*Star is an extra-curricular activity held each year across the state of Alabama. The competition is a timed exercise in solving trigonometry problems that incorporate the use of right triangle formulas and the laws of sine and cosine. Contestants have up to one hour to complete the regional test, and the person who achieves the highest score in the shortest amount of time wins.

Students that take the exam and enroll as a major in a surveying program in college are automatically eligible for NSPS college scholarships.  The student with the highest score on the test from Alabama receives a $500 check! Second place student received a $250 check and the teacher who administers the test also received a $250 check! Those winning students are also eligible to receive an ADDITIONAL $500 and $250 if they later enroll as a surveying major in college.

Trig*Star is co-sponsored by the National Society of Professional Surveyors and the Alabama Society of Professional Land Surveyors.
